LED Acne Phototherapy Treatment

LED Phototherapy offers an exciting, safe, painless, effective & affordable option for treating acne. It can be used as a stand-alone therapy or in combination with most other acne treatments.

The treatment involves using an LED light source of a particular wavelength and intensity to kill the bacteria that are involved in causing acne and a second wavelength to assist in healing the skin.

LED Blue Light Therapy (415nm wavelength) kills propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria involved. It targets porphyrins, the metabolic product of the bacteria, and produces an oxygen free radical that ten destroys the bacteria.

LED Red Light Therapy (633nm) causes a mild inflammation and sets up an immune response that helps to regenerate these cells. This helps to rejuvenate skin and helps with skin healing.

The 2 wavelengths - blue and red - are used synergistically to treat the acne and are alternated each session. Session need to be separated by 2-3 days. The treatment has no side effects and requires no recovery period. Our clinic uses a Healite 2 LED system which is TGA approved.

Clinical trials suggest that treatment twice a week for 6-8 weeks, followed by once a week for 4 weeks helps to reduce bacteria counts and the inflammation associated with acne, and therefore reduce the number of active acne lesions. Improvement is scored in the region of 70-85%.

(LED phototherapy cannot be used in patients taking Isotretinoin - Roaccutane)
